Biltong Festival, Somerset East

18th July 2014 to 19th July 2014

Biltong Festival 2013, Somerset EastThe 2013 Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival, hosted by the Blue Crane Route Municipality, will be held at the Somerset East Showgrounds on the 12th – 13th July 2013.

Enjoy two days of foot stomping entertainment, biltong and hundreds of tantalising stalls, while you ‘hang’ with the Blue Crane Route Municipality and have loads of fun under the winter sun in Somerset East!

The origins of biltong can actually be traced back to ancient seafarers who pickled their meat to preserve it for the long months that they were at sea. However, pioneering South African ancestors took this preservation method and adopted it to suit their ‘trek’ across the African continent by sun drying their meat.

Today, it has been transformed into a delicacy sought after in communities abroad, specifically the United States of America, Europe and Australasia (Australia and New Zealand).

Reminiscent of North American ‘beef jerky’, biltong is spiced with a blend of vinegar, salt, sugar, coriander and traditional spices passed down from generation to generation. So, if you come down to the Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival, be sure to buy enough biltong to not only sample various flavours and types, but also so that you can make intriguing meals with biltong as your main ingredient.
